The following statement has been issued by Senator Harry F. Byrd.
Honorable W. Averell Harriman, in a radio broadcast especially for Virginia over Station WMBG, Richmond, Sunday, injected himself into the Virginia primary campaign for nomination to the United States Senate by referring to me.in a manner indicating his disapproval of my reelection. _ . _
Mr. Harriman is a member of the Truman official family in high standing. He is a 100 per cent Trumanite, and evidently he is trying to help his Brother Trumanite, Francis Pickens Miller—another 100 per center—who, on April 1, said:
“On every one of the great issues which have confronted him during his administration, the President has made the right decision.”
I doubt whether even Senator Humphrey would give a stronger blanket endorsement to Mr. Truman than Francis Pickens Miller did in that statement In his WMBG broadcast to a Virginia audience, Mr. Harriman sa:d the National Democratic Party must “stick to our progressive platform and our progressive policy,” and that in order to do so the next Democratic platform must include, and the Democratic Party, if elected, must pass, a compulsory FEPC.
Trumanism is one of the great basic issues between Francis Pickens Miller and me. President Truman has been speaking more kindly of Mr. Harriman than of any of th« other Presidential candidates. As his boss, the President is allowing time, to campaign for the Presidential nomination. The President is pressing hard for a compulsory FEPC. So is Mr. Harriman. What will this mean? If enacted, that proposal will completely destroy the fundamental principles of States Rights.
