of virtually every citizen’s private business to tell employers who to hire, who to fire, arid who to promote.
Federal inquisitors, appointed by the Commission, under this legislation would have the authority to enter every employer’s place of business, to examine—his—books and papers without processes from court and to search for evidence on which to base charges against him. _If enacted, this proposal would deprive people of their constitutional rights by forcing them to give evidence against themselves. It would provide federally appointed examiners to hear the evidence, and the record could be against the employer in his absence.
Fines and imprisonment would be imposed against,any person found to be hindering the operation of the commission in its mission.
Thus far this iniquitous legislation has been defeated by Southern Senators and Congressmen. A compulsory FEPC would be tragic for the South and would cancel out the great economic progress the South is now enjoying.
Mr. Harriman said he would demand that the Democratic National Convention, next month, adopt a resolution promising prompt enactment of the FEPC, even if means a Southern revolt.
Qould it be that Mr. Harriman thinks Mr. Miller, if elected to the Senate, would help him and Mr. Truman in this matter? Or could it be, that the injection of a top flight Truman political associate in the Virginia campaign may be construed to be that Mr. Truman thinks Mr. Miller needs his help?
Whatever the situation may be, the fact that the Presidential Candidate most favored by Mr! Truman to date took occasion to criticize my public record in a broadcast to Virginians over station WMBG demonstrates the bitter and relentless determination of those opposing me to accomplish my defeat because I have stood firmly for the principles of States Rights and our Representative Democracy.
Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Scudere arrived on Thursday from San Francisco at -the home of Mrs. Scudere’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Updike where they will spend several weeks while Mr. Scudere is recuperating from a spell of illness.
Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Dudley of Alexandria were Sunday guests of Mrs. E. W. Brown of Washington.
