Are the leaves of your Sycamore trees turning brown and dropping from the tree? Are the trees nearly devoid of leaves and look as though they are dying? If your Sycamores have these symptoms* do not be too alarmed as the trees are not dying and probably won’t die even though they look mighty bad at the present time.
Sycamore trees with these symptoms are suffering from a leaf and twig blight known as “anthracnose” which is quite prevalent in Virginia this year. This fungal disease is wide spread in the eastern United States attacking both the leaves and smaller twigs of Sycamore. “Anthracnose” appears1 in the spring and it seems to be encouraged by wet weather. The leaves and growing tips of the twigs usually brown and die as they emerge from the bud and this stage of the disease is often confused with the late frost injury. The leaves usually develop brown spots along the veins which rapidly enlarge into dead areas causing the leaves to curl up and finally drop from the tree. Infected trees may lose their entire crop of leaves and remain bare until a second crop is produced later *in the summer. Small twigs are killed by a canker which forms on twigs tip to one inch in diameter. Generally the disease is not fatal although it may kill a young tree or weaken a tree to such a degree that it becomes prey to insect attack and other diseases. No practical control has been devised for forest trees. Control measures for shade trees consist of pruning the infected twigs and then burning the dead leaves and twigs. Spraying with a bordeaux mixture may help but the spray must be applied just after the buds have opened and the leaves are half grown. Sprays applied when the leaves are beginning to turn,^brown are of little use. ! *1
