Teacher Shortage
If it is any consolation, Rappahannock is not by itself in havng trouble getting teachers for the public schools. On the theory that “misery loves company,” the superintendents of schools can get together and hold a good tale-of-woe party.
Even Fairfax county, usually spoken of as “teachers’ heaven” because of the far-superior salaries paid there, is lacking 46 grade teachers, according to a report last week.
A Richmond newspaper recently tried to answer why there are no teachers. The first hue and cry, as usual, was that' of poor pay, and the lack of graduates from teachers’ colleges. The general answer is that the profession of teaching is not made attractive to young people seeking their niche inlife. Another answer lies in what is termed “the times that is, the alarming trend of the day for young people to seek an “easy living,” and the teaching business is classified^ as missionary work. There has to be a form of consecration in teachers, and, like religious workers, the spiritual urge to serve mankind doesn’t strike large numbers.
In Rappahannock it is more difficult to get teachers because of the lack of living quarters. Boarding a teacher can tie a housewife down and the inconvenience is not worth the smal profit, seems to be the general opinion expressed. Commuting from a neighboring town is expensive. Then, too, entertainment like movies and concerts and things most teachers enjoy are not to be had in rural communities, so the teachers-seek jobs in or near cities.
It has been found in the past that after the teachers get to Rappahannock they enjoy their work, the children, and the people, since the county has a friendliness to mark its character; but the big problem is to get the teachers to come.
