We arrived in Toledo early Sunday morning, September 20, where we were met by Messrs Randolph and Lipp and from there drove to Adrain, the county seat (population 20,000 plus 52 factories) of Lenawee county. Got a room at a tourist court, changed into work duds, off to Lipps farm to grind the week’s supply of feed, get it mixed, loaded and delivered to our tent at the fair grounds at Adrain. Then back to Lips to load calves in Robert Loves’ semi and head for the fair. Messrs Lip and Love, having done all of this gratis wouldn't think of accepting nay pay as they were truly appreciative of the Virginia Exhibit at their county fair.
And while speaking of the Lenawee County Fair, do not think in terms of a county fair as held in Virginia for in size there is no comparison. The Lenawee Fair was as big as the Atlantic Rural with the exception of her beef breeding classes and with the exception that all classes were for Lenawee county residents. Lenawee County feeds 18,000 calves annually, the third largest cattle feeding county in the U. S. Feeder calves are bought in September and October, put on feed and kept in the barn until sold the following August and September. It is a great corn, soybean, alfalfa county having very productive lake bed soils. Our exhibit was well received and did good that will be felt for the next five to ten years. Practically every visitor to our tent was a feeder; they were all most complimentary about the calves on exhibition, and those who had bought in Virginia last year were walking-talking advertisements.
