Mere Belongers
At a recent meeting of a local county organization, out of, say 30 or 35 names called by. the secretary during roll call, a total of 6 were present. This—wasn’t— surprising. It is a monthly occurence. Is it the fault of the organization and its leaders for not drawing its members by more interesting programs? „ . . Partly, and only partly, is this true. It is the fault, mostly, of persons we shall call, habitual belongers. Start a new organization and they’re the first to pen their names to the charter. A month or two, the novelty wears off and they find themselves unable to attend the routine monthly meeting due to a sick headache, cold, etc. This, slackness seems unimportant; however, it is a sign of a deeper slackness. It’s a weakness. When you join an organization you automatically pledge your support. These organizations are still founded for tlie good purpose for which you first joined them. Yet you ignore any responsibility you may feel towards them.
