Hurricane Hazel came to Rappahannock County, Friday evening in a torrent or driving rain and high winds. Though the eye of thq hurricane bypassed the county, heq long arm reached with devastating» results into the county’s apple' orchards. -It—is estimated by county growers that 1,000 trees were completely destroyed and 2,000 blown over and injured. A total of 50,000 to 60,000 bushels of apples were blown from the trees.
A stretch through F. T. Valleyr and Peola Mills felt the storm at’ its strongest. Countless trees were uprooted, barns destroyed and roofs buckled. J. L. Yowell lost a horse, when it fell into a hole left by an uprooted tree. The F. T. orchards suffered great losses both in trees uprooted and trees injured by the wind.
