Gov. Stanley Urges Conservation Of Natural Resources
The economic strength of the Commonwealth can be measured by the condition of its soils, waters, forests and wildlife resources. Over the years these resources have contributed materially to the development of the industry, business and agriculture of the State. Because of the great dependence of all Virginians upon the natural resources of the State and the importance of conserving them—the week of October 17th through 23rd, 1954, has been designated as Virginia Natural Resources Conservation Week. —
Much progress has been made in protecting and conserving Virginia’s natural resources. Notable among our efforts in combating soil erosion and promoting a program of wise use of our farm, lands and forests has been the formation of 28 Spil Conservation Districts, embracing ninety-seven of the ninety-eight agricultural counties of the State. This organized action on the part of Vi rginia landowners clearly indicate their intention to work together in the all important job of protecting the soil, water, forests and wildlife of the Commonwealth. As a result, complete soil and water conservation plans have been developed on more than one-fourth of the farms of the State. These plans are based on the proper use of each .acre of land the application of the required conservation practices to maintain and improve the farmlands and forests of the State. Many thousands of land-owners who do not have complete soil and water conservation plans on their farms haye applied one or more conservation
measures.
