Chief8 Lose 6 to 5 To Oak Grovers In Heartbreaker '
The Chiefs bowed to Oak Grove for their first loss of the season Sunday as bad luck frowned on them with 2 men on base and no outs in the ninth inning.
The Grovers led 6-5 when the Chiefs came to bat in the bottom of the ninth. P. Clater went to first and was moved to second by B. Clater. With no outs .perfect plan (agreed upon by manager and veteran players) was a sacrifice play to advance the Claters. (With a long fly then P. Clater could tie the score. B. Clater would be on base with the winning run.) The Grovers, sensing the scheme, played in for the first 2 strikes. On the third they moved back, thinking Pullen, a strong man at the bat, would hit away. If the play had gone over it would have caught the Grovers flatfooted. But then Bad Luck choose to show up. The pitcher, slightly off balance on the throw, moved a few steps forward, and taking the poppedup-bunt for one out, threw it to first to catch the runner on his way back. •
Junior Hawkins, pitching for the Chiefs, held the Oak Grovers to a minimum of hits, with his devastating drop ball and a tricky change of pace. It was anybody’s game with first one team surging ahead, then the other. Both teams played good clean ball. They were so evenly matched that luck had to be the deciding factor.
Charles Dodson had 3 hits and B. Menefee and B. Clater each 2 for the Chiefs.
