Carol took the pictures and studied them with tearful eyes. She recognized the background as the side entrance of St. Thomas’s In one of the pictures, David, obvious of the world, was staring into space. A breeze had ruffled his hair out of place and he was anxiously chewing on his thumbnail

“Why he looks like a little boy all dressed up for a party and afraid to go to it,’’Carol said slowly. She glanced at the newspaper photo. “It’s not the same man.” she said.

The older woman studied the girl for a miinute and then she

smiled. “My dear,” she pid, “a man has two faces.” She nodded at the newspaper. “That one, the one he shows to the world, looks tough, or cold or brave, or whatever he thinks it should. The other he shows only to himself when he is shaving, and to his wife when they’re alone. Thats the real man, and that’s David’s real face in the snapshot,.* Now, I’d better run or we’ll both be late for your wedding.”

Carol got up and hugged her grandmother close. “Will you tell Mom and Dad that I’ll be ready to leave for the church in five minutes?”

Her grandmother grinned, and her eyes twinkled as she said, “I just realized, the camera’s a wonderful i n v e n t i o n, don’t you think?”

Carol nodded happily. “Grandmothers are too,” she said fervently.
