Polio Picture
With the introduction of the Salk vaccine the polio picture in this country has undergone a radical change. Since this change has a bearing on the health of your entire family, you ought to know about it. Here’s what has happened in the past few years: Children from five to nine years old used to be one ®f the largest groups of victims. In 1952 they accounted for 24 per cent of all paralytic cases. By now most of these school youngsters have been vaccinated and the proportion of rases among them is declining. In 1956 it dropped to 16 per cent of all cases. That's the bright side of the polio picture.
Of course, with a decline in one age group, there has been a corresponding rise in percentages among other age groups not yet protected by Salk vaccine.
Take pre-school youngsters under five years old, for instance.^ Tn 1952 fhev comprised 29 per cent of paraletic cases. In 1956 the proportion had climbed to 39 ’ per gfnt. Infants one and two years old had the highest percentage of all. That’s why polio authorities like the'National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis urge that they be .first on the vaccination list. ■£%■■< "T ! I
The next most vulirtrabtf group in the new polio picture ire teetf agers and young adults from 15 to “ to 40 yeas. In 1952 thev comprised 33 per cent of pitalytic cases. Tn 1936 the percentage was 34 per cent. Since polio paralysis is especially disastrous to wage earners in a family, they need protection urgently.
Think these fieures over. If your school age children have been vaccinated, that’s fine. But don’s forget the other mefnbers under 40 in your family., starting with the baby.

. There will be a poliomyelitis „ vaccination clinic at the Rappahannock County Health Department on Thursday, June 27 from 7:30 to 3:30 p.m. for anyone desiring this immunizzation.
Anyone under 21 yrs. may receive the shots without charge but must bring written consent from a parent for the first one. All over 21 yrs. are asked to 'contribute $1.00 to reimburse the Rappahannock Polio Chaptrr as thev are purchasing the vaccine for this age group.
