Know About Fuses
In a previous article we discussed the make-up and functions of the service entrance—the point where your electric service actually enters your home. The service entrance equipment includes conductors; service drop and many other items which do not interest the average layman.
However, in this article, we are going to cover a small item of service entrance equipment that has caused homeowners many a headache—but one that has saved many a life—the fuse.
The fuse box is one of the few actual contacts the residents has with his electric service aside from the actual use of electricity for lighting and appliances.
A fuse is the guardian or safety valve for your wiring system. It’s purpose is very' simple. When you try to use more electricity than your wiring system can carry, the fuse steps in and prevents any overheating of the wires that would eventually lead to fire. How? A fuse contains a metal strip which will melt and cut .off the electricity from the main circuit. When this occurs, the fuse “blows”.
Fuses will also “blow” when two electric wires accidently cross, causing what is called a “short circuit.”
You should, of course, know exactly where your fuse box is located so that you can replace fuses at once.
There are several steps to be followed in replacing a “blown" fuse:
1. Disconnect lamps and appliances put out of service by the “blown” fuse.
2. Turn off the main switch.
3. Replace the blown fuse with a new one OF THE SAME SIZE; They screw in and out like light bulbs.
4. Turn on the main switch.
