Says Industry Man
For th« first time in year*, forests of the country arc growing wood faster than it is being removed, and Virginia’s woodlands are right in step, Carl Olsson, Chesapeake Corp. of Virginia, chairman of the" Virginia Committee of American Forest Products Industries, said today. Olsson said timber growth in Virginia is comfortably in the black, ahead of removal in all categories. Sawtimber growth is 1.3 times removal, and all timber growth ' is 1.4 times removal. Furthermore; he said, timber growth in the state is increasing. Sawtimber growth is almost 20 tier cent greater than it was in 1944. . ,
Through the forest industries Plant More Trees program, Olsson said, the “landowners of Virginia are helping to assure that the picture will remain bright.”
More than 30 million seedlings Were planted in the state during the past season by private ian<V owners. Assistance was given to many planters by the state * woodusing industries, which matched planters’ seedling purchases with gifts of an equal number of trees.
“Emphasis on the fact that our forest* are renewable is being made in Virginfa through the Tree Farm program of growing continuous woodland crops for commercial use.” he said.
“Virginia’s wood-using industries are proud to be in step with the rest of the country as we*pass a revolutionary milestone.
