Fletcher’s Mill

On June 1st, Fletcher’s Mill, for many years one of our best county industries, and an old landmark, ceased to be a mill.
Mr. and Mrs.' Gene Wood, it’s present owners, have leased it to the Culpeper Farmers’- Cooperative.
Mrs. Wood inherited the property from her father, the late James H. Fletcher, who inherited it from the late James William Fletcher, his father.
James H, Fletcher operated it for many years and in 1923 enlarged and made entensive improvements.
The mill is thought to be one of the oldest in the county and was referred to as “Pass Mills” in the will of George Washington Thornton, who died in 1819.
It was heated by a huge corner fire place in the basement of the mill. Later large stoves were used.
In 1946, after the death of J. H. Fletcher the property was leased to the Page Milling Company.
In its early history the mill was operared by a Mr. Hull and a Mr. j Brown, but information about that I period is lacking.
