The Word Is | “Convenience” The price of food i* in for much discussion again. So. is what is known as the ‘ spread”, tthe difference between what the farmer receives for food products and what the consumer pays in a store. The main reason for today’s spread can be expressed in one word: Convenience. 1 As U. S. News & World Report puts it. “The fact is that the housewife today demands something more of her grocer than she did a few years back.. ...The modem homemaker wants tomatoes from Texas when they aren’t available from nearby truck gardens. Instead of bovine sugar in a 25-pound bag. she buvs it in 1 or 2-pound boxes that fit neatly on the cupboard shelf. A pre-cooked, frozen beef pie that she can pop into the oven for a hurrvup meal is a timesaver for which she is willing to pav.” It is said that a few years age it took about 514 hours a day to prepare meals for a family of four. TV same meals can now be prepared in 114 hours if convenience foods are used.
