Fot these reasons, lets face our selves— our situation— with openmindedness and thought.
Are we as smart, or as well.iiiformed as our ego frequently leads us to believe? Men-our women have more schooling than we do. In 1940 the median school years completed by our male population was but 5.1 while the gals had completed 6.3 years. Ten years later we men had gained more increase in schooling than the females; the males had advanced to 5.8 school years but were still a full year behind the ladies.
Progress yes, but how do our education levels compare with state averages ? In 1940 we men \ycre 2.2 school years below the state average! Ten years, later wo were just as far behind. Our female population in 1940 was 1.4 years below the state average and ten years later were a full 2 years below the average! During a recent conversation with Billy Kilby, Chairman of our School Board, he expressed deep seated joy in the realization that several of our young men are now in college while in| some cases their parents hadn’t finished high school. This is as it Should be. Most parents enjoy beyond words the fact that their children are getting more than they . did.
Indusry is looking for skilled labor. To have skilled labor meanR we must have more education. If you were manager of an industry looking for a new location, where would you go? You’d locate where the labor is available of the highest educational levels.
If we are to keep-up educationally it is a two-way responsibility. Parents must encourage their children and our children must take advantage of opportunities. Boys here is something to think about. Accord
