Mrs. James Graves in Madison County during September. Mr. Schumacher said he had an IFYE student from Culpeper in his home several years ago. He stated that he finds our language not so hard to speak since he had Latin and German in school.
In the International Relations Class we had Mrs. Margaret Moles, Floyd County, who had been an 'IFYE student to Brazil, Jim Johnson, an IFYE to Italy, in addition to Miss Simmons and Mr. Schumacher. We were also fortunate to have Miss Lelia Gentry of Flint Hill, who has been a student at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark on a'FuIIbright Scholarship.
Extracurricular activities included an inspection of the United States Coast Guard cutter, the Cherokee. This is an old ship having been built in 1939 and is used mainly on mercy missions and firefighting within the area. After inspection we were served refreshments which consisted of sandwiches, pickles, potato chips, pretzels, cakes, cookies, punch and ice cream prepared by the sailors on board the ship. We also enjoyed a moonlight cruise aboard the ferry Pocahontas playing between Little Creek (near Norfolk) and Kiptopeke on the Eastern Shore. The Pocahontas is the largest vessel now in this fleet, after being extended 76 feet.
