Look for hog prices to take a little upturn in the next week or so, after a bigger-than-expected drop.
In 12 major markets last week, receipts were 11 per cent below the previous week, indicating a letup in the rush of hogs to market that has pushed prices down in the last few weeks.
In the past few weeks, average weight of hogs slaughtered dropped from 242 pounds to 235 pounds. Federal slaughter was down only four per cent from the same time farrowings indicated it should have been down about 15 per cent.

Hogs in Richmond last week were quoted at $16 to $16.75 with Southeast Virginia prices at $16 to $16.50. Top hogs at Virginia averaged $$15.50 to $16.25 with Chicago hog prices at $15.25 to $16.25.
