4-H Clubs Being Organized

In Schools

4-H Clubs are being organized in the schools this w<3?k; two at Washington Elementary School, three at Sperryville Elementary; one at Forest Grove and two senior clubs.

Meetings will be scheduled for the third week of each month. Any bov or girl between the ages of 10 and 21 may become a member of a 4-H club.

Since the availability and reaction rate of ground limestone in the soil is governed largely by its fineness it is obvious which of the above materials will do the farmer the most good in the shortest time.

To quote from A Handbook of Agronomy, put out by the VPI Agronomy Department, “It is recommended that for general use limestones should be ground sufficiently fine so that 100% will pass a U.S. Standard 10-mesh screen and 50% will pass a U.S. 100mesh screen.”

Chemically there is little difference. Analysis reports show Sample No. 1 to have a neutralizing value of 97.29% as compared to 94% for Sample No. 2.

Reports are that prices spread on the land are the same for both sources. When one considers degree of fineness of the ground limestones and means of spreading, one would assume wind would cause a higher percentage of Sample 1 (or source 1) to drift to an adjoining field or farm. However, the sample shown your county agent was damp, (water tests show but 9.2 pounds more water per ton thamso called dry limestone) which prevented any drift in so far as the rye could detect.
