Mr. Hedges then advanced the idea that “there ought to be no private ownership of any portion of that region, hut that the whole of it ought to he set apart as a great National Park, and that each one of us ought to make an effort to have this accomplished.”
All members of the party, except one, thought this to be an outstanding idea. They returned home and devoted two years of intensive effort to get this idea accepted. They were rewarded in 1872 when Congress passed an act establishing Yellowstone as the first National Park in the United States and in the world. Thus was born a new conception of land use for the benefit and enjoyment of the American people.
Since that historic campfire, the National Park idea has spread to many countries throughout the world and our own National Parks now number thirty. All of AmeriKssoatsoaxspaaoaatxxaocxxxx
