The producer with plenty of replacement pullets on range is going g to have a choice to make pretty g soon between crowding his birds l because of high egg prices and sel- ’ ling off old hens at high hen prices.
Leghorn-type old hens were bringing seven cents to 12 V2 cents ^
for one large lot last week. ^
Chicks set the last few months j indicate that replacement numbers ( will be back up to and perhaps a little above last year by December, but with the shortage earlier, total | number of layers is expected to be about five per cent below last year on January 1.
This.means egg prices ought to
be good at least through about j March. It also probably means that egg prices will be back down
again in the fall of 1961. j
The Virginia adjusted egg price , last week was 52 to 53 .for Grade A large and 421/2 t0 43 for mediums. New York was 54 to j 57 for large and 43 to 45% for mediums, with Rawleigh, N. C. " at 48 to 51 for large and 39 to 41for mediums.
CORN l
Corn prices have probably al- , leady taken their major harvest , drop, at least in Richmond and
Eastern Virginia points. j
As anticipated, the export market for early wet corn was not there this year and the Norfolk . market was pricing on the'basis ‘ of October deliveries.
The September 1 production forecast is 4.2 billion bushels.. ...up two per cent from August 1 but four per cent less than last year.
Last year, corn prices on the average in Virfginia dropped 10 or 11 cents from September 15 to October 15, but apparently this drop came earlier this year.
In fact, corn prices took a little spurt last week reflecting good export demand a little later on.
Hurricane Donna seems to have . ruined a good deal of early planted corn in Eastern Virginia, but most farmers seem to think they can harvest up to 90 per cent of later planted fields, although it will take longer and cost more.
Best advice seems to be to get out and harvest what you can. Moisture added by Donna won’t hurt keeping qualities as much as
