Rappahannock was still digging out tiom the week before snow when the new storm struck. All activity a-.id traffic was at a standstill. Secondary roads were completely impassable. The main highways weie barricaded at times by the wind-driven snow, despite the efforts of the Highway Department aided by privately owned equipment and operators. The individuals lending a hand with - dozers, graders etc were Wallace Critzer,Lewis Moore, Robert L. Hickcrson, and Albert Wines. In addition state equipment and men from Suffolk and Fredericksburg were also' sent to this area.
Mr. M. H. Brady, Supervisor of the Highway Department, said, “In my 42 years with the state, I am sure this winter has been the worst 1 .have ever seen.”
It was estimated that there were between sixty or seventy miles of drifts on the county roads, ranging . from four to fourteen feet deep. - ^
Another five indies of snow fell » Saturday night ind Sunday morning, putting a frosting on that already acquired. Sunday and Monday a demc fog shrouded the county which left a skim of ice on the: cleared highways.
Rappahannock County Schools have been dosed a total "of 14 days ? due to snow this winter. They reopened Tuesday after a week of holiday. - Deer by the score, haye descended from Shenandoah Park to the apple ordiards in search of food.These usually graceful animals are seen in the Sperryville area dragging around through snow up to their middles. *
Farmers battled the drifts to get feed to the cattle stranded in < pastures. i Miss Ruby Jenkins who tends the weather guage at Washington, Va. reports 67 inches of snow since the first fall on December 11.
Considering the existing conditiots, few accidents of any nature occurred.
