Woman Dies
i “Aunt Jennie” Bell Cantey, a 102 year old negro, vvoman, who “mothered” countless children and adults, and was well known for generations in Alexandria, died Tuesday in Alexandria Hospital. ~ “Aunt Jennie” was bom April 1, 1859 in Rappahannock County. Her grandmother was a slave, but she didn’t think her naothre was. When she was a baby the James Mille.v family took her to raise. Later the cared for the children of that familj.
She recalled playing with them in gullies after big Tains. The “play” was the collection of cartridge shell which would wash down from the hillsides where fighting in, the War Between the States had taken place. * We’d pick up baskts full of them," die said.
“Aunt Jennie” was married three times. Her third husband was a Spanish American War veteran, and she dsew a pension which made her partially independent.
