The insecticide heptachlor i s recommended again this fall for control of alfalfa weevil, County Agent W. H. Lyne has just learned from entomologists at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Research continuies to show that fall applications of; heptachlor arc effective against the over wintering adult weevils. Growers may use either commercially prepared fertilizer-heptachloij mixtures or a 2*4 per cent granular heptachlor at any time after the last cutting this fall but not ltjter than October 15.
Lyne reminds farmers that in addition to the manner and time of treatment, thejse precautions must be taken to avoid the problem of residues: Do not make more than one treatment And-do not pasture animals on treated fields until after the first cutting of alfalfa is made ifext spring. ^ Growers may get information on fertilizer mixtures, equipment to use, and other details from Agent Lyne. The State Department of Agriculture has Announced tthe approved fertilizer-heptachlor mixtures.
