Last month my attention was called to an article appearing in one of our leading agricultural magazines on a beef cattle operation out west which was using artificial insemination. Results (as published) were fantastically successful. We wrote the editor. Yesterday a reply from . the ranch owner himself was received. ■ The $6.00 per head was only the service charge per cow as suspected. The conception rate was 70% which increased the cost $2.57 per cow. Additional labor boosted the cost tp $10.32 per head, or a bit better than 70% above the published cost.
Also the rancher-stated: "If a person had a small herd where he only had 100 eligible cows, the costs could easily get up to $17.00 per head.” He states further regarding his present program, “We use ... no JLI” after divising what he considers a better approach to breeding cows. This he did not describe.
