Each semifinalist will be asked to take a second examination. Those who repeat their high performance will become finalists in the Merit Program. Winners of Merit Scholarships will be selected from the finalist group on the basis of school records and recommendations, test scores, extracurrciular activities, leadership ability, and accomplishments outside the classroom. Each finalist is awarded a certificate of merit attesting to his outstanding, performance.
The scholarship stipends are based on financial need. The minimum award is $100 and the maximum is $1500. The average stipend awarded to freshman Merit in 1961 was $847. Each scholarship constitutes a form of educawas
worth it.
