A fervor of activity among firemen, carpenters, painters and electricians preceded opening last night of the annual firemen’s carnival at Flint Hill. A giant display of fire works announced that the four night festivities were under way. A grand parade tonight (Thursday) will begin at 7 p.m. with 125 entries accepting invitations to participate. The parade will be led by Miss Shenandoah Apple Blossom, Jane Ashley Embrey, as Grand Marshal and the Marine Band and Color Guard from Quantico. The musicians of the Band enjoy a reputation of excellence that dates back to the founding of the Marine School in 1917. Placed on a par with the finest service bands in the country, the musicians each year spend a large part of their time “on the road" spreading the John Philip Sousa traditions throughout the United States. During a normal month the band averages about 15 performances. The band plays at honor ceremonies for visiting dignitaries, in ceremonial parades and at periodic concerts. In addition to their duties as bandsmen, the musicians must also keep abreast of Marine combat subjects. Presently numbering over 40 musicians, the band is led by Chief Warrant Officer Karl W. Rhine. Band Drum Major is Gunnery Sergeant Rog£r H. Bartholow.
