Madison Extension

Center Begins

2nd Year Sept. 16

The Central Virginia Center of the School of General Studies, University of Virginia, will begin it s second year of operation of an extension center office in Madison on Monday, September 16 when day students will report to classes. The School of General Studies is the division of the University which offers college courses, and other programs of education, in offcampus locations throughout the State. As in the first year of operation, several programs of study will be offered for residents of the Madison Center area. The Day Program is the focal point of Center activities although an Evening Program is also offered. A first-year college course is offered through day classes that will provide area high school graduates with beginning college work. This course is also open to all qualified area adults. It is expected that students who successfully complete this program will continue their education at other Uw stitutions of higher learning. Instruction is given by a faculty which travels daily from Charlottesville. Center facilities provide classrooms, study areas, a library facility, a language laboratory, and a chemistry laboratory that is currently being installed. A second phase of the Day Program is designed to provide education beyond the high school for students who are not necessarily planning for a college degree. Students in this program may undertake terminal work leading to a certificate in General Education. Students who need additional preparatory work before undertaking college credit classes may enroll in this program for special non-credit classes as the beginning of their educational program. In addition to the Day Program, a two-phase program is offered in the evening. The first phase of the Evening Program consists of content (continued to page 3)
