the same period. This grant is being used to conduct experiments with whole-body radiation. Dr. Hume is investigating the possible use of fetal bone marrow following irradiation or drug therapy, both of which damage the patient’s own bone marrow. The two grants announced today are among 178 totaling $4,365,725 awarded by the Society to scientists and research institutions throughout the country. Research grants are made by the Society three times a year based on recommendations by scientific committees. Grants in effect in Virginia have been chosen from hundreds of applications received each year by the Society. At present, the Cancer Society is supporting seven cancer research grants in Virginia totaling $270,489, including the two which have been renewed.
