Every state in the union and hundreds of counties and cities have thriving Historical Societies. It is to these grass root groups that America owes so much for the preservation of our early culture, but more, it is, to them a debt of gratitude is due for keeping alive a healthy interest in our past and the people and things which made it. Can we do less here in Rappahannock, so rich in history, than say a comparatively new county in Wisconsin or South Dakota? What does a Historical Society really do? According to the National Trust Publications, it does many and Varied things depending on location, people and circumstances. However, most Societies do these things. It collects and protects the written materials of its area - official documents, records, letters, news papers, journals, reports, bills, pictures and any materials reflecting the life of the people.
