Alcohol and Driving
"There is a definite correlation between the number of drinks an individual consumes and his chances of causing an accident when he gets behind the wheel of a car. In some people, after 4 drinks the probability of having an automobile accident is 25 times greater than if sober." This information is contained in the latest issue of the Virginia Health Bulletin dealing with the problem of alcohol and the driver. “Research has indicated that highway accidents involve not only a great number of‘drunken drivers’ but also the moderate social drinker,” says Dr. Mack I. Shanholtz, State Health Commissioner.
"The moderate drinker’s ability to drive is impaired deceptively after but a few ■ drinks. The feeling that Tm in good enough shape todrive’ can itself be induced by a few drinks since subjective judg: ment is the first human faculty to be adversely affected ! by alcohol," Dr. Shanholtz stated. "It is this false feeling of confidence that is more dangerous than the obviously drunk driver who in many instances is quickly apprehended or restrained from driving at all by himself or friends. The Virginia State Department of Health has long been active in accident prevention. In addition, it has the responsibility for the State’s Alcohol Study and Rehabilitation Program and the testing program , under Virginia’s Implied Consent Law. Viewing the problem as a
