Places First at Fair
The Virginia 4-H Livestock Judging team coached by Randall Updike, placed first at the state fair. The team was composed of Mary Graves and Billy Tanner of Madison County, Douglas Price of Smyth County, and Billy Hodge of Augusta. Other team placings (in order) were: Pennsylvania - 2nd, North Carolina, 3rd, Maryland - 4th, South Carolina 5th, West Virginia - 6th, Indiana - 7th, and New Hampshire - 8th. Randall was an outstanding 4-H member of this county and a former member of our Livestock Judging team. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Updike and presently is employed as Assistant County Agent of Orange. This team won further honors at the Kansas City Royal of which I do not have the details, however Mary Graves won high individual honors over all other contestants. ALSO: Three hundred horses were exhibited by Virginia 4-H members at the State Fair! Entries were from 34 counties including Culpeper and Fairfax. In fact Club members from Fairfax exhibited a total of 36 horses and was but one of the seven counties exhibiting more than twenty horses!
