Clear but cool weather prevailed last week during the four-night annual Amissville Firemen’s Carnival aiding with the success of activities. The parade with many varied entries was well attended. Thursday evening and winners were: best fire apparatus over 500 GPM, Berryville; best under 500 GPM, Warrenton; best appearing fire company and men, Warrenton; apparatus coming longest distance, Berryville; oldest fire apparatus, Coles District. Best rescue squad, PennDaw, second, Yorkshire; best band, William Taylor High School, Warrenton; second. Harpers Ferry, W. Va.; best majorette group, James Monroe High School, Fredericksburg; second, Manassas Cannonettes; solo majorette, Caro lyn Martin. Best appearing civic float, Amissville Ruritan Club; comic float, Chester Gap Hillbillies; commercial float, Lom-Bar-Dy Tea Room, Amissville; best marching unit, Arlington Ladies Auxiliary, who also placed first for best Ladies Auxiliary; second, Strasburg Ladies Auxiliary.
Miss Gloria Dodson of View-j town was title winner of Queen of the Carnival with Miss Gail Frazier, Amissville, in second place. Miss Beverly S t r i n g f e 11 o w , Amissville, placed third. Gloria received her tiara from the 1966 Queen, Miss Ann Holmes. She was also presented a gift and a bouquet of red roses. The runners-up received gifts and a cash award. All contestants received a gift.
