Final signup figures on participation in the 1968 commodity programs, which ended March 15, for corn, grain sorghum and wheat were reported today, by H. S. Barksdale, Chairman of the Rappahannock County ASC Committee.
Ninety-two Rappahannock farmers enrolled to divert 1173 acres from the production of corn. There are 21 farms enrolled to participate in the wheat program. Farms participating in these voluntary programs are coi operating by reducing acreages of crops in a surplus position and at the same time improving the prices received for these crops through pricesupport payments and commodity loans. Participation in the respective program is a condition of eligibility for a price-support loan. Where diversion of cropland is a provision of the program, as in the case of corn and grain sorghum farmers earn diversion payments. Any acreage reduced from the farm allotment or base acreage will be determined by ASCS upon request and payment of a reasonable fee. Also any crop acreages to be planted may be determined in advance on request and payment for this service.
