For the first time in years, cows do not have to be tested for TB and Bangs in order for heifer calves from that herd to sell in special feeder sales held in Virginia! Nor must heifer calves be from herds found clean of TB and Bangs through the Market Cattle Testing Program. The laws about shipping feeder cattle across state lines have been reduced as a result of progress made in getting rid of these diseases. TB has been under control for sometime. In recent years one Virginia county after another got rid of Bangs by first test and slaughter, by vaccination against Bangs, and by vaccinating heifers, by testing cows sold by the head for slaughter. Rappahannock was declared free of Bangs September 15, 1966. This means the cost of getting calves ready fora state sale will be muchTess to the farmer. Also, the change should mean more heifer calves being put in special feeder sales.
