Chicken Littles Do Not a Highway Build
A nut fell from a tree and hit “Chicken Little" on the head. Without ever stopping to see what it was, she took off in all directions at once crying "The sky is falling; the sky is falling.” As she spread the word, an astounding number of others as foolish as she also took up the cry and spread the rumor.
"Chicken Little” haw been at work in Rappahannock County. The minute there was an application to the Zoning Board of Appeals for the reopening of a stone quarry east of the Town of Washington, "Chicken Little,” without taking a look, started yelling “the sky is falling," relating all of the horrors of such, real and imaginary.
Not once has "Chicken Little” said these people are permanent residents,, active community and civic workers, and would not, surely, create an unpleasant situation with which they would have to live adso.
"Chicken Little” has never said the quarry is several miles from the town, and a third of a mile from the nearest house, or that the stone here is of excellent quality, the kind needed for the dual lane construction now underway on Route 211. And here is all this lovely rock only a stone’s throw (pardon the pun) from the town by-pass scheduled for construction in the near future.
She failed to say that a quarry and plant mix industry would provide jobs for 1 5 to 20 people in the county (we did without a game warden for a whole year in an effort to provide employment for only one county man) and have perhaps an annual payroll of $ 100,000, in addition to producing tax revenue.
