New School Program

The Warren-Rappahannock [*ublic School System is currently studying the possibility of formulating a humanities program for Warren County High, Rappahannock County High, and Warren County Intermediate School. As part of this study and survey, workshops of an in-service nature are being conducted with the English and Social Studies teachers in the three schools. In these workshops, which were held in the respective schools on October 15, 22, and 16, Mr. Gerald Slavet, Artistic Directoi for the Wayside Foundation foi the Arts discussed ways in whicti the foundation could supplemenl the cultural and humanities in the schools. During the ensuing discussion, Mr. Slavet explained how social themes which were woven into dramatic and cinema productions could be designed in a model program to both enrich ths school curriculum and involve students more in classroom lessons when studying man, his environment and the relevant social issues of the day. Mr. Slavet said that the humanities program, If established, would be planned to meet to express needs of the children in the WarrenRappahannock schools. It was explained that the facilities of the Wayside Foundation for the arts could be used combined or separately in the respective schools as conditions permitted. Mr. Slavet said that dramatic productions, both on stage and through means of the cinema, could be brought to the school or even into selected classrooms i( such a program was formulated in the school division.
An interest survey is currently being conducted among the Workshop participants to determine the feasibility ol designing a similar program in the schools to be financed under 'I'itle III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act ol
