Hilton at 5:30. 1 counted on an hour before my China Town Tour.
Again we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County. The drive was over a winding road, through lushly wooded hills to the Woods. We had a long stay here with the fabled California Redwoods in all stages of development - from months-old seedlings to 1000 years old elders which rise 300 feet or more. We returned by way of the little town of Sausalito, the artist’s colony town. We enjoyed a long stop there, but I began to notice the time. I realized we would not get back by 5:30. Due to this long stop and the late afternoon traffic I became worried, however, the driver assured me that we would get back before 6:30. Thus, instead of taking me back to the Hilton, he let me off at the nearest possible place to the El Cortez. I just had time to go to my room and wash my face before it was time to leave again. Hie car that came for me contained four others, one a gentleman, a retired school teacher. Then we were off on the Ding How Tour for China Town.
This Ding How Tour gave me more for my money than any other if I leave out the cost of shoe leather from walking. We had the most delicious Chinese dinner at the Kuo Wah. After dinner a young Chinese guide was assigned to a group of us for the tour of China Town. Out on the street we went and the guide cautioned us to keep together. I didn’t need this caution. He took us up a long flight of carpeted steps to the Chinese Temple where Buddhas and Taoists worship together. This was beautiful and most interesting. We had explanations of the Temple and the worship.
Questions could be asked as we wished. Hien we were taken up another flight of steps for an informal reception. This is a private association room where the families get together for their social time. We were served tea and Chinese goodies in true family style. We were entertained with music, talks, and an analysis of the Chinese language with demonstration of Oriental painting. Hie guide asked us if we knew the reason for bringing us up these stairs. After no reply from us he told us he wanted us to know that there were no elevators in China Town. Hiey walk up steps all of the time! We went on exploring back alleys, herb shops, Chinese Theatre, newspaper headquarters, an art school (children and adults were painting) and a visit to the cookie factory where we discovered the secret of fortune cookie making. We then had a ride on the cable car up “Nob Hill.” The car was crowded and I had to stand for a time on the outside and a new experience at that. When we got off the cable car we were told our tour would end at the Fairmont Hotel. I was excited about this. I had met a couple from North Carolina on the Muir Wood’s tour who were staying at the Fairmont. Hiey told me that I must go to the Fairmont at night to go up in the glass elevator to see the city. When I asked the guide if we were going up in the glass elevator he told me it would take too long. I could understand this. However, we were taken to the Crown Room of the Top of the Mark where we did get a panoramic view of the city and the lighted Bridge.
