This One Came

‘Over The Mountain’

Her name isn’t Goldilock and there was only one bear. The story is no fairy tale, though for the moment it was breath-taking.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Patzig of Sperryville were hiking around one of the nature trails from Skyland in Shenandoah National Park on a recent Sunday. Both were going in the same general direction but not right together. As Mrs. Patzig ambled up a path she met two gentlemen hikers who when they saw her motioned for her to remain still and quiet. She did, and they whispered that there was a bear behind her. She cautiously looked around and sure enough about 15 feet from her was a very large black bear. When she looked around, the animal snorted and showed his teeth and she slithered around behind the nearest tree. Mrs. Patzig said all she could think of was her husband who wears bifocal glasses and must pay strict attention where he is walking. She had visions of him stumbling upon the beast. From behind her tree fort she said loudly, “Rudolph, there’s a bear.”

By this time Mr. Patzig had indeed seen it, but the bear turned then and walked away from them. At this point, he took the accompanying photograph.
