New Market Museum
To Open Sunday
The New Market Battlefield Park’s million-dollar Hall of Valor will open to the public Sunday, park director James J. Geary announced today.
The new museum, which memorializes Virginia Military Institute cadets in the 1864 battle, was dedicated May 14 with the 1970 VMI corps of cadets in attendance. However construction delays prevented opening of the building at that time.
The Hall of Valor will give a graphic survey of the entire Civil War in addition to describing in detail the Battle of New Market. A new 16-minute motion picture, “Stonewall’s Valley,” will relate Stonewall Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864.
Featured also in the new museum and visitor center Will be the 12-minute motion picture, “New Market ... A Field of Honor,” which tells of the 247 VMI cadets and their heroic participation in the battle in the surrounding fields 106 years ago.
Among three-dimensional exhibits on display will be two on
°i Mi °| railroads and four dioramas. One diorama shows the blowing up of the tunnel beneath Confederate lines at Petersburg. Others deal with the firing on Fort Sumter, Stonewall Jackson’s men throwing rocks when they ran out of ammunition at Second Manassas, and a Confederate soldier giving water to wounded Union soldiers in the heat of battle.
The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
