More Big Fish 1970
Anglers in Virginia waten caught about 25%more big fish during the first half of 1970 than they did during the same period last year, according to mld-yeai tabulation of Virginia Trophy Fish Citation applications by the Game Commission’s information office. Entries for 1970 stand at 394 compared to only 306 at a slightly later date in 1969. Only two records have been broken during the year to date. A 32 pound 3 ounce striper caught from the Buggs Island tailwatei section of Gaston Lake by Byron Simmons easily surpassed the previous 30 pound 11 ounce specimen from the same waters Two monster sunfish, one a 4 pound 8 ounce bluegill from a farm pond near Alberta caught by Thomas E. Jones of Richmond and a like specimen of redeai sunfish taken from a private pond near Chase City by Gene Ball oi that area together beat the old 4 pound 3 ounce record. Muskies began showing up from nearly all Virginia waters where they had been stocked swelling the mid-year total to 34 compared to only 8 the previoui year. Eleven from Game Commission owned Lake Brittle and 7 from similar Lake Burke helped to swell the total Occoquan and Beaver Creek Reservoir monopolized the northern pike entries. Stripei numbers were also up with mosl coming from the Dan anc Roanoke Rivers and Buggs Islanc and Gaston Lakes.
