Unseasonably warm weather marked the first two days of the general hunting season in Rappahannock County. Hunters were out in good number and hunter success deer-wise has been as good if not better than past years. Over fifty bucks have been checked in Rappahannock through the first two days, 58 deer had been checked in the county as of Tuesday afternoon and evening. Several of these had been taken in adjoining counties.
Two bear have been checked. Both of these have been unusually big. John M. Clark, Jr. killed a giant sized bruin last week, estimated to be in the 500 pound range. This bear was taken in the Washington-Sperryville area and checked at Baldwin’s Grocery. On Monday of this week Samuel Aitken of Stevensburg caught sight of a bear about 150 yards distant from him in the Chester Gap area. As a result oi some good shooting Sam Aitken claimed “Mr. Bear,” a 430 pound, actual live weight, specimen.
