The amazing Cross Country ream of Rappahannock County Tigh School finished its season vith an overwhelming victory Saturday, November 13 in the A Division competition of the State Dross Country Tournament at the Dollege of William and Mary in Williamsburg. The Championship went was run over a 2.4 mile course in sunny, unusually warm November weather. The results were more than sunny for Rapoahannock - a Virginia State Dross Country Championship in A Division. It was a story book finish for a Cinderella team. The obvious hero of the event was Charlie Thomas - again. The consistently fast and constantly modest Thomas placed first in the A Division, leading his team to a 11-5-6-7-9-11 place sweep of the event. The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh places were captured by Bill Taylor, John Summers, Branson Jenkins and Tom Taylor, respectively. Ninth and eleventh positions went to Bob Titchenell and Bobby Foster. Scores were: Rappahannock 23; Essex High, 48; Parry McCleur High of Beaua Vista, 62. The A and AA (next large division) races were run simultaneously to save time and afforded Charles Thomas an opportunity to again race the best in the higher division. He placed second on the 150 man field representing about 20 of the best small and medium sized schools in Virginia. In the process of placing second, he out ran every member of the Culpeper County High School team which won the AA Division.
Thomas’ performances have been so consistently mentioned that the other members of the team may have been somewhat over shadowed. The brother team of Bill and Tom Taylor have been consistent high scorers for the Panthers all season, with the younger, freshman Bill, showing great potential as the number two runner for the young team. Sophomore John Summers has been the number three man, exhibiting a powerful, clean form and a determination which promises to move him to the top. Sophomores Branson Jenkins and Tom Taylor have been trading fourth and fifth places all year in practice and on the course. Bobby Foster and Bob Titchenell, fellow sophomores, and Andy Nichols, a freshman, rounded out the regulars on this first championship team. John Paul Dodson served faithfully as manager for the team and eighth grader Barry Adkins, ran unofficially.
