Panther Tales

By Brenda Printz v

Last spring a group was formed that changed the outlook of the whole year at Rappahannock High. Mr. Toth organized from his own experience the first cross country team Rappahannock ever had. The team composed of Charles Thomas, Bill Taylor, John Summers, Andy Nichols, Bobby Titchenell, Branson Jenkins, Tom Taylor, Barry Adkins, Bobby Foster, David Thornhill and Mike Raney practiced all summer. Old Hollow was the favorite practice track for some of the boys. When school started in the fall the team began running a course near school two afternoons a week. The team started out with no funds of any kind and had no uniforms or shoes. The special spiked shoes had to be borrowed or bought by the boys themselves. All season the team competed against larger schools of AA ratings. They finished the season with a 4-1 record losing only to Warren County on their second meeting. The great success of the cross country team has stirred a flame of hope throughout the student body. It is hoped by one student that the winning track team will cause the basketball team to work harder. The morale around school has been really boosted not to mention school spirit. One outstanding runner Charles Thomas has come out of the track team. He broke records on all the course he ran. Charles is college bound with a sport scholarship. And it’s said by Mr. Toth that the Virginia Tech coach has his eye out for Charlie. Mr. Toth also has said that the sport has become well rooted in school and will continue to be a number one sport at Rappahannock.

Bill Taylor, the number two man on the team, is destined to be as good if not better than Charlie
