In 1912, in Labrador, he noticed something unexpected. When meat was frozen outdoors at 40-below in mid-winter, it tasted much better, when thawed and cooked, than meat frozen more slowly in spring or fall. Capitalizing on the unexpected, the naturalist returned to the U.S., started a frozen foods business, and in 1929 Clarence Birdseye sold his company for $22 million!
