AND WHAT CITIZENS of Rappahannock should realize — many already do, we suspect — is that lack of mushroom “growth” does NOT mean that a county is “stagnate.” Stability and a desirable, settled way of life certainly does not mean that the county is either dying on the vine, or failing to offer opportunities for future generations.
The question of what to do to make a rural life more attractive for upcoming generations is important, to be sure, and all of us owe it to ourselves and to our children to pay more attention to finding needed answers. But one thing we all know for certain by now: Opening the floodgates to rampant “development,” in whatever guise, doesn’t solve any problems, it only creates new and far more serious ones. □
