THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND in Rappahannock was marred by two accidents in which the damage to the involved vehicles was truly spectacular. It was a miracle that only one of these accidents resulted in a fatality, so mangled and twisted was the wreckage of the cars involved.
There can be only one conclusion from both of these accidents — they were the result of excessively high speed. Both occurred on fairly clear stretches of roadway, under reasonably favorable conditions.
Only the drivers weren’t reasonable. No road can be built to accommodate the top speeds modern cars are capable of attaining — which raises some stark questions about the propriety of even offering such machines to the driving public.
BUT THERE IS NO QUESTION whatsoWer about the ability of all drivers to operate their cars at sensible speeds, under all conditions. It isn’t sensible to try to navigate a twisting country road at 70 mph, and it isn’t sensible to try to streak down the most carefully engineered super highway at top speed.
Both paths lead to the hospital, if you’re lucky — to the morgue, if you aren’t.
