Vepco hearings
under way
HEARINGS BEFORE THE STATE Corporation Commission on a proposal by the Virginia Electric and Power Company to stretch a network of high voltage powerlines through Rappahannock, Fauquier, Culpeper and Warren Counties got under way Wednesday in Warrenton, and continued today (Thursday) in Washington.
Testimony is being taken from a large number of residents of the affected counties. Many who oppose the powerlines claim they should be built in existing corridors, but Vepco holds that this will not be feasible.
Rappahannock’s League for Environmental Pro— tection Inc. says the powerlines are “unwanted and unneeded” and would harm “the uniquely untouched Rappahannock countryside.” RLEP is an intervenor in the court action against Vepco.
In Fauquier County Vepco’s proposals were turned down by the County Planning Commission and were not acted on by the Board of Supervisors. Circuit > Court Judge Rayner V. Snead ordered that environmental impact hearings be held after the power company brought suit to compel acceptance of the lines.
Hearings in Warrenton are scheduled for 2 and 6:30 p.m., and in Washington the hearings will be held at 9:30 a.m. and at 2 p.m. A third hearing will be held at 10 a.m. April 30 in the SCC courtroom in the Blanton Building in Richmond.
AFTER THE SCC reaches a decision the Vepco suit will be heard in Circuit Court. Environmental groups in both counties, as well as individual citizens have opposed the power company’s plans as unnecessary and destructive to the landscape.
The proposed lines include:
A 115 Kilovolt line from Remington to Warrenton. A 500 kilovolt line from Morrisville to Bristersburg with a substation at Morrisville. A 230 kilovolt line from Morrisville to Bristersburg with a substation at Morrisville. A 500 kilovolt line over Louisa, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper and Fauquier Counties from the company’s generating station on the North Anna River to Morrisville. A 500 kilovolt line over Warren, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fauquier and Frederick Counties from the Morrisville substation to the West Virginia Line. □
