Early spring, when the grass starts greening up but is still too short to fill the old cows stomack. is usually when we receive the most calls concerning cattle poisoning. Over the past few years, the biggest single killer in our area has been Water Hemlock. All parts of thfe plant are poisonous. As the name implies, this plant likes wet feet and is found in 'marshy areas, along stream banks and around seeps and springs. The leaves are compound with rough edges, the stem is hollow at the base and the roots of older plants are a cluster of tubers. If not too numerous, the most practical way to eradicate Water Hemlock is to grub them out.

Actually., there is considerable variation in nutrient content depending on age and how the manure tyas handled and stored. Usually, manure that has accummulated in a barn and has had bedding added to it, will retain a higher percentage of nutrients. Packing by the animals reduces leaching and the bedding absorbs the liquids.
