our observation tnat lew matters aie su iuuuy that the public can’t be let in on what is happening. After all, these “personnel” are dealing with the public’s business; if they can’t stand the glare of public exposure, then maybe they’re in the wrong business.
It’s always been a great mystery to this newspaper, anyway, why so many public officials want to conduct the public’s business behind closed doors. The timely, cynical thing would be to mention a word like “Watergate,” and wink knowingly. But we aren’t prepared to go that far in our attitude toward local officials.
We aren’t, that is, unless they keep on trying to conduct much of the public’s business in private. □
